Enroot to the Cleanest village
On a sunny day, we thought of taking a trip to Asia’s cleanest village which is in Meghalaya
We came from Shillong to Riwai which was around 82km
We hired a taxi from Shillong coz there is a limited number of public transports to Mawlynnong.
Our first destination was Riwai and later, we planned to go to Mawlynnong
The living root bridge is in Riwai village which is around 6 to 8 kilometers away from Mawlynnong
To see the root bridge, We must pay for the entry
We pass through the houses in the village and then there is a path you have to trek down to see the miraculous engineering of humankind “The Living Root Bridge “
The Living Root bridge is surrounded by rain forest and a river full of lush greenery
it’s a suspension bridge formed from living plant roots
these root bridges are not seen anywhere else in the world
One of us, asked the people about the history behind the Living Root bridges
Most of the locals do not know when it was started but it is more than 150 years old
the bridge is extremely strong and can bear heavy load
After seeing the root bridge harry felt hungry and thought of having food so, all went to the village in search of the restaurant
We did not find any but he had the option of home-cooked food stalls from the locals
All had rice, daal, and chicken curry after finishing lunch and rested for sometime
We headed to Mawlynnong village
Mawlynnong is the cleanest village in Asia
one of the cleanest villages harry has ever seen
it is their way of living everywhere there is a bamboo container to collect the garbage
the kids have been taught from childhood to keep the surroundings clean
the village was chosen by Discover magazine as “Asia’s cleanest village”
the community here in Mawlynnong takes the initiative where all the residents should participate in cleaning the village
There is an entry fee for entering the village which goes towards the maintenance of the village
By the time we finished roaming around in the scenic beauty, it was evening so we all planned to go back to Shillong
Our bucket lists ended up in an enjoyable and adventurous way
We visited this place during the dry months in mid-April coz there is no rain and a clear atmosphere to travel
How to Reach Mawlynnong the Cleanest Village in Asia
Travel to Shillong
If you’re coming from outside Meghalaya, you’ll likely fly into Guwahati, Assam, which has the nearest major airport.
From Guwahati, you can take a taxi or bus to Shillong, which is approximately a 3-4 hour journey by road, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Shillong to Mawlynnong
From Shillong, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Mawlynnong.
The distance between Shillong and Mawlynnong is approximately 90 kilometers, and the journey takes around 2-3 hours by road.
The road to Mawlynnong passes through picturesque landscapes and small villages.
Public Transportation
Shared taxis or buses might also be available from Shillong to Mawlynnong, but the frequency might be limited, so it’s advisable to check the schedule in advance.
Private Vehicle
Another option is to rent a private vehicle or hire a taxi from Shillong for more flexibility and convenience in exploring Mawlynnong and its surroundings.
Accommodation
Once you reach Mawlynnong, you can find various accommodation options, including homestays and guesthouses, to stay overnight and explore the village and its attractions at leisure.
It’s always a good idea to check the current transportation options and road conditions before planning your trip.
Additionally, consider arranging your accommodations in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, as availability may be limited in Mawlynnong.
